Joe's last assignment for the United States Army was to the 85th Division at Fort Sheridan, but before that he was assigned to the 327th MP Battalion. A Lake County Sheriff's Deputy would play Taps and a detail of the Rockford P.D. would fire the three volleys, so the only role for the soldiers was the presentation of the casket flag. The 327th MPs were given that honor.

So, naturally, they arrived early and practiced.
