High school principal, East Peoria Community High’s Paul
Whittington spoke about Newton
and how the news of his sacrifice has affected the community. Newton graduated
from the school in 2007, Whittington said, the same year he enlisted in the
Marines…He added in his nine years as the principal of the school, this is the third former student (George Obourn and Kristofer Walker) who
has “given the ultimate sacrifice” while serving in the military.

Retired high school teacher Dave
Lukachik remembered Newton's work ethic in his cooperative
education class, especially the desire to graduate. Newton not only juggled classes, but worked
at Steak 'n Shake as part of his course load.
"That's the way it is with heroes, they go and do what they're
supposed to do. They do their job and
whatever is laid out for them they go out and do it.”
