The capitol of Afghanistan is Kabul.  It is located on a high plain that presses into the Hindu Kush mountain range from the south.

The capitol of Baghlan Province is Pul-e-Khumri.  It is located in a river valley that extends to the north from the Hindu Kush.

The only road that crosses the Hindu Kush in this area connects Kabul and Pul-e-Khumri and is shown as the 100-mile black line segment in the map below.

Two army sergeants, Kevin Grieco and Nick Casey, were visiting a police station in Pul-e-Khumri when Abdul Ahad walked in and exploded the vest he was wearing.  That was Monday, October 27th.  A Taliban spokesman said Ahad lived in the Baghlan Province – a local boy.  Today is Tuesday, November 4th.  His remains have been mopped up and flushed down some Pul-e-Khumri drain by now.

On the opposite side of the world, over the next four days, Kevin and Nick will again be among those who love them.  On Wednesday and Thursday, in suburbs west of Chicago, Kevin’s wake and funeral will be observed as will then on Friday and Saturday, in Canton, Ohio, be Nick’s wake and funeral.  Four hard days.
